I love yoga and learning to practice so much I recently immersed myself in a 6 month, 200 hour yoga teacher training and graduated at the end of April. I am now a certified yoga instructor! It has been both a lifeline and a gift and has helped me physically, mentally, and emotionally through some very difficult life periods.
I started this blog near the end of training, but decided to wait to finish because I wanted to let the experience ‘wash over’ me. I thought I should fully absorb all I learned before writing about the experience. Most of what we go through and learn in life has a more than immediate impact.
Reflecting on that 6 month period and the few months since, thoughts keep coming to mind of the group of people I connected with and shared training time with. My fellow yoginis were a lovely group of like-minded individuals, whose collective energy as a group and individually was positive, optimistic and accepting. Everyone was kind and encouraging as we immersed ourselves in this fascinating and challenging ancient field of study.
The term soul mates is defined as a person with whom one has a strong affinity, shared values and tastes, often with a romantic bond but not necessarily. Yoga certification with this group made them my soul mates, or soul companions if you will.
Another aspect of teacher training that really worked for me was intense exposure to the many traditions and teaching styles taught by each of the various teachers affiliated with the program. Having access to such variety of expertise was sort of like choosing the tasting menu at a fine restaurant (yes, yes, I know, I always make it about food!) Getting to try lots of things and seeing what really does it for you is a GREAT way to get to know yourself and embrace your own preferences.
I am so grateful to have taken this time for education. I feel proud of the accomplishment and look forward to a lifetime of practice in a discipline I not only respect, but deeply enjoy and get so much from. I feel blessed to have found it and want to share that love with others.
Special thank you to my “Ohm” girl for being such a great support, she knows who she is.
