My Healing Journey
People come and go in our lives all the time, but the extraordinary people are the ones who come in and have a deeply lasting impact.
I didn’t come to health coaching randomly, nor did a lifelong interest in nutrition inspire me to enter the field. In fact, my getting sick and becoming overweight may be a common story amongst health coaches, but what makes me special are the practitioners I surrounded myself with.
Sharing the Magic
These women aren’t simply great practitioners who offered good advice but rather generous, smart and truly caring women who spread their own brand of magic to become deeply inspirational mentors to me.
Willie August is a life-long student of holistic health, nutrition and medicine. She’s an 80-something year old mostly raw foodist who is an institution in our area and works out of our local health food store. I went to speak with her at the suggestion of a family friend when I was overwhelmed with flare-ups from a heart infection I could not get under control. So began my real education in nutrition, which up until that point I mistakenly thought I really understood quite well. Little did I know that the information available in the mainstream is often wrong, contradictory and thoroughly confusing!
Willie has a no-nonsense approach, but she’s warm, loving and constant. She’s got an encyclopedic knowledge of whole foods (among other things) and always took a genuine interest in me and my progress. She is nurturing and gentle and serious and always makes herself available to clients, a most powerful example.
Detox & Purification
I met Ana Ladd-Griffin soon after my interest in the subject of raw food began. Ana is Natalia Rose’s most senior detox counselor. Natalia is a well-respected clinical nutritionist in New York, an authority on detoxing the body and the author of many books on such subjects as raw food transitioning and deep tissue cleansing for women. You cannot do research in these areas without seeing Natalia’s name come up. I consider myself quite lucky and considerably changed for the better to have made contact with Ana some years ago and to have taken part in Natalia‘s advance training class.
My own personal journey and work with Ana was so life transforming that I can hardly think about it without being moved to tears. Ana is the most non-judgmental, tolerant and encouraging person I’ve ever met. I say this with no exaggeration.
Every session I had with her in those early days was her spreading her own brand of magic; she taught me, inspired me, instilled confidence and congratulated me on every success, no matter how small. Though I’ve worked with many practitioners, some of whom became mentors, no one person has had more of an impact on me than Ana. She sets the bar high with her approach to health coaching and even though my own style has evolved over time, my example of what to aspire offering my own clients always comes from Ana.
Every time I meet with a client I channel Ana and her lovely, soothing manner. What’s really been exciting, since becoming a Rose Program Certified Counselor, is getting to work with Ana as both a friend and colleague.
Career & Life Coach
I began working with Allie Roth, career and life coach, after a period of upheaval in my life. I had undergone major neck surgery and developed a viral heart infection that plagued me with chronic flare-ups that were severe in frequency, duration and intensity. I could no longer do the work that I had been doing and frankly needed to find something more satisfying anyway.
Allie’s specialty is guiding her clients to discovering their ‘soul’s work’ and created a 10-step process designed to help you figure out just what that is. I had been ‘interviewing’ career counselors during this time but the minute I spoke Allie I knew working with her would be totally different than the mainstream, conventional approach most career counselors used, always with a focus on writing the perfect resume and how to conduct the perfect interview. I knew immediately that Allie was able to think outside the box and really help me figure out what I wanted to do when I grew up! The time I spent working with Allie was truly invaluable and helped me realize that I am passionate about helping people feel better and achieve their goals with regard to health in much the same way I had been guided and supported. The exploration I did with her led to a decision which led to a big picture which in turn led to a plan.
Working with Allie was one of the most empowering things I’ve ever done, more so than any other kind of therapeutic process. You really get to heart of what makes you tick, what brings you satisfaction and fulfillment and you get very clear on your talents, strengths and likes in addition to your less positive attributes. I still work with Allie, though my focus and purpose have changed. Now it’s all about defining my role as a health coach and building my practice. Without Allie’s creative methods to guide me I might still be caught in a trap of my own self-imposed limitations.
I was introduced to Linda Strobeck by Ana shortly after she began coaching me. Linda is a Certified Colon Hydro therapist, as well as a Certified Nutritional Counselor, who administers the closed-gravity Woods method and in my opinion is the BEST there is in this field. I’m proud to say that not only has Linda become my friend over the years but my teacher and trainer as well. This is a woman who is at the top of her game…she’s an amazingly talented colon therapist with a feel for the practice unlike any other practitioner. She’s also the most incredible person and truly meant to be in the wellness field. She’s an excellent listener, immensely empathetic, down to earth and so much fun. Her exceptional qualities as a person make for an outstanding colonic experience, you feel safe, comfortable and well-cared for. You are truly in caring and professional hands. As a teacher/trainer of this therapy she’s serious and demanding of focus and quality. Linda is a class-act and her energy is uplifting and infectious!
It Takes a Village
So these are the incredible women who have become important mentors to me and have spread their own brand of magic in my life. I hope and aspire to have this effect and lasting influence on my clients lives as these ladies have had on mine. They’ve imparted wisdom, guidance, support, tolerance and acceptance and all with humor, warmth and grace and I can’t thank them enough for all they’ve done for me.
